Nobody wants to live with knee pain. Not only is it a painful condition to deal with, but it can also negatively impact your quality of life, including what you’re able to do. Around 20% of the population experience knee pain, with around 4.5% of the over 50 population requiring knee replacement surgery.

Knee Replacement Surgery Conditions

  • If you’re experiencing severe knee pain due to injury or arthritis, and you’re struggling to do the physical activities without feeling pain, then you may benefit from knee replacement surgery. While this can seem like a big undertaking, the surgery is lauded by those who have gone through the process, with the surgery having high success rates and satisfaction.
  • After you’ve had the successful surgery, you’ll find that your pain levels are severely reduced and that you have greater mobility. While the primary goal is to reduce the pain, patients always find that their quality of life has improved, too. It’s an excellent option for people who are still experiencing knee pain after they’ve tried different treatment options, such as exercise and pain relief medication.

What is knee replacement surgery?

Knee replacement surgery (arthroplasty) involves removing the damaged joint surfaces and replacing with an artificial knee joint made of metal, plastic and/or ceramic. The surgeon will make a cut on the front of the knee and fix the replacement to the bone using acrylic cement. The incision will be closed with stitches or clips.

Recovery time for knee replacement surgery

You should be able to walk without assistance around six weeks after surgery. It can take up to three months for any pain to settle and up to a year for any swelling to completely disappear.
Depending on your line of work, you should be able to return between six and 12 weeks after the surgery. Your knee will be in recovery for up to 24 months after your surgery, as muscles are slowly restored through exercise and scar tissue heals.

Is knee replacement surgery right for me?

People who benefit from knee replacement surgery often have:

  • Moderate or severe knee pain while resting, either day or night
  • Difficulty walking for more than a few minutes without significant pain
  • Chronic knee inflammation and swelling that does not improve with rest or medications Knee deformity — a bowing in or out of your knee
  • No improvement with other treatments such as anti-inflammatory medications, cortisone injections, lubricating injections, physical therapy, or other surgeries.

What are the risks with knee replacement surgery?

Knee replacement surgery is generally a safe operation with excellent results. The complication rate following total knee replacement is low. Serious complications occur in fewer than 2% of patients. Possible complications are infection, blood clots, bleeding, damage to blood vessels and nerves around the knee, numbness around the scar and leg. The implants can loosen with time and it could be necessary to redo the operation.
