Knee replacement surgery (arthroplasty) involves removing the damaged joint surfaces and replacing with an artificial knee joint made of metal, plastic and/or ceramic. The surgeon will make a cut on the front of the knee and fix the replacement to the bone using acrylic cement. The incision will be closed with stitches or clips.
You should be able to walk without assistance around six weeks after surgery. It can take up to three months for any pain to settle and up to a year for any swelling to completely disappear.
Depending on your line of work, you should be able to return between six and 12 weeks after the surgery. Your knee will be in recovery for up to 24 months after your surgery, as muscles are slowly restored through exercise and scar tissue heals.

Knee replacement surgery is generally a safe operation with excellent results.The complication rate following total knee replacement is low. Serious complications occur in fewer than 2% of patients.
